"How to do" video tutorial, click here.
Technique: Slab building.

1) Wedge very well the clay.

2) Open the clay using some guide strips for slab building technique. I’m using 5mm thickness strips.

3) Transfer the template to the clay and cut it out.

4) Shape the shell and let the pieces dry for a while.

5) Score both sides of shell for better attachment.

6) Apply slip.

7) Join the parts together.

8) Make a coil for better attachment.

9) I like to finish this step with my fingers.

10) Put your stamp on the back of the base. I use cornstarch so it doesn’t stick to the clay.

11) Mark the flange to provide a guide for joining the parts.

12) Cut off the excess clay from the flange.

13) Score both parts for better attachment.

14) Apply slip.

15) Attach shell to flange.

16) Finish this step using the tools you like the most.

17) Do the same on the inside.

18) Score both parts, the bottom of the shell and its base, for better attachment.

19) Apply slip.

20) Attach base to shell.

21) Make a coil for better attachment and finish the piece using the tools you like the most.

22) Give the shell a more curved shape and let the piece dry for a while.

23) If necessary, restore some moisture to the piece using a sponge.

24) Shape some shell segments.

25) Finish the piece using a sponge if you like.
